Subject:  Need Information
I found this as I was looking for a chat room for the deaf, and especially social places and for the deaf in the Oklahoma City area... I am deaf, and do not read lips well anymore, and since my husband passed away, I just really have no one that I can read very well, and so I never know what is going on... my dr. suggested that I learn to sign and get involved in the deaf community and make some friends. I am trying but do not know where to go... i am catholic, so I thought maybe the church knows of some places and events I could go to to learn and make friends. It is very lonely since I move here away from my son in IL. and I need to make some friends I am not looking for dates, just friends to go places with and maybe have a meal, and such. HOpe you can help. I would be interested in volunteer orgs also. Or quilting guilds, or book clubs.... just anything.

Subject:  who provides terp for rel. ed?
I'm a parishoner in Portland Maine as well as a teacher of the Deaf--Hello to Mary Un ..Here's my q I've been approached to interpret for a 2nd grader's after school rel ed program which includes the sacraments of first communion, eucharist and confirmation. The deaf child is mainstreamed with a progressive loss and recently started working with sign lang. interpreters and parents don't sign. I told the mother that I couldn't interpret and I believed it was the diocese resp. to provide QUALIFIED interpreters. I offered to instruct that parents in what religious signs to use. Now I need to say no to the religious director. I'll give her your website. It is a tough decision as I see the child should have access to his rel. program but I don't think it would be professional of me to provide it. What insights might you have. Can you email me at repowers6@aol.com
